There is nothing better than gathering your loved ones and having a Braai with a few drinks on the side!
Either you’ll have fond memories of family braais over the years, or you’ll be thinking, what is a braai?
A braai is a traditional South African grill over an open fire and the flavour from the food is incredible! In this article from Susmans Biltong, we will talk you through some simple braai recipes that you can cook up to enjoy with your friends and family. If you don’t yet have a braai, don’t panic as these can be purchased on our website. From Beer Birds, Big Green Eggs, Potjie Pots, Braai accessories and Cadac, we’ve got it all.
If you’re going to have a good braai, then chicken wings are an essential! Tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, these are a dream to cook and even better to eat.
This is also such a simple recipe, as all you need is a pack of fresh chicken wings and a bottle of Spur Sweet n’ Sticky Marinade. Other marinades can be used, but for best results, we recommend Spur!
To avoid burning the marinade, we recommend cooking the chicken wings for 10 minutes before brushing them thoroughly with the Spur’s marinade. Then, continue to braai the chicken wings until they are up to temperature and cooked inside.
Or, mix things up with different
spices, such as Peri Peri or Garlic! Both Spur and Steers offer some
incredible flavour South African marinades.
Our only advice is that you are
prepared with napkins at the ready, as these can get a little messy!
If you are looking for something really easy, then cheat it with our amazing Sosaties!
Traditional South African Sosaties
are dish of meat cooked on skewers. Our Sosaties are freshly made by our
butchers with free range chicken and lamb, freshly cut and marinated in our old
traditional recipe. For extra flavour, we have added apricots, peppers and
onions, ready for you to put straight on the Braai.
We won’t tell if you don’t, so take
the credit and we’ll do the hard part! Our tasty pre-packed Sosaties can be
bought here.
That is enough chicken for now, so let’s switch things up with some mouth-watering steaks.
Again, this is a really easy-to-do recipe, which involves a nice bit of steak and some Ina Paarman Meat Spice Seasoning! Both the spice and steaks can be bought from Susmans Biltong! Click here to see our range of finest Aberdeen Angus Steaks.
For best results, massage oil or
butter into the steak, before sprinkling it with the South African meat spice. Then,
once you have prepared your steak, just whack it on the braai for as long as you
desire, but we recommend medium for best texture!
If you don’t know what a boerie is, it is a South African take on the hot dog!
Boerewors are braaied then cut up and placed into bread rolls, topped off with onion and tasty sauces. With this recipe, you really can cater to different tastes by choosing a mix of flavoured boerewors to use. From simple traditional South African boerewors, to flavoursome garlic boerewors or peri peri boerewors for a kick of spice! All of these flavour boerewors and more can be bought directly from Susmans Biltong, just click here.
Once you have cooked your boerewors
sausage, place it into a finger roll and finish off with some fried onion. Of
course, a boerie isn’t complete without a dash of sauce, so take your pick from
the Steers sauce range,
including BBQ, Garlic, Peri Peri or plain old Tomato.
